Public Conversations and Activations

Over the duration of the Faculty Project Exhibition, Sullivan Gallery will serve as a site for activities engaging visitors in the interrelationships of sound, media, and ecology.

Of Sound and Site

Artist talk and listening session with Eric Leonardson and Anthony Janas. The Flying Monks “perform” using multiple oscillator tones that reflect and combine with physical structure of the Sullivan Gallery. Created for choreographer Fujima Yoshinojo (Rika Lin), transform the space into a temporary sensory experience of aural architecture. Janas will briefly discuss his outdoor sound activities, inviting gallery visitors to “A Prairie In the Lake,” a nighttime soundwalk with listening stations at 7:00–10:00 PM at Northerly Island Park, 1521 S. Linn White Drive, Chicago. This event is supported by the Chicago Park District’s Night Out In the Parks series, organized by the Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology. Artists’ Statement
Attempting to transfer shared sites of wonder, or anxiety, or both into the gallery, I draw from personal history, selecting artifacts to complement what would be seen, read, spoken, heard and shared. Connecting my haptic, corporeal way of exploring or hacking my day-to-day life and the detritus that accumulates, I use a range of methods, from drawing to soundwalking to radio and Internet transmissions to live performance with electronics and readily available objects, to make and think about the city, including its non-human life in the air, on land and within the water as soundscapes. This, in turn, may reflect on the role of gallery as a site for sound practice; for public engagement, a comment on the function of place and space in cohering agency in a culturally shifting and fluid world.”—E. Faculty Projects is an annual exhibition that presents work by SAIC faculty who have recently completed sabbatical and other leave projects. By sharing their current work with the school community, faculty can communicate how their research and practices relate to the local, national, and international art and design communities. Team Teaching Award for Eco-Sensing and the Soundscape

ecosensingsoundscapeIn October 2014 Lindsey French and I were awarded our request to team-teach a proposed course called Eco-Sensing and the Soundscape at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, for the 2015-16 academic year. Our course will be offered in the Fall 2015 term and cross-listed with the school’s departments of Art and Technology Studies and Sound.

Lindsey French is a Chicago-based artist and educator. Engaging in gestures of communication with landscapes and the nonhuman, her work spans a variety of media including video, performance, audio sculpture, and generative literature. Find more info on her website.

The School provides opportunities for its faculty from different departments to co-teach expanded curricular offerings, and the committee thanks you both for your contributions as colleagues and valued members of the School community.

Amherst College Copeland Colloquia on Art in Place / the Place of Art

ArtinPlacePosterFallFinalBeginning in January I will be an artist-in-residence at Amherst College. I was selected by faculty at Amherst College to be a Copeland Fellow in their colloquium on “Art in Place/the Place of Art.” The Copeland Fellows for the spring semester also include saxophonist Matana Roberts, filmmaker Catherine Masud, and choreographer Idan Cohen.

The Copeland Colloquium was established in 1971 by Morris A. Copeland, Class of 1917, and his wife, Mary, with the intent “to bring together people of diverse backgrounds and different perspectives to engage with faculty and students at Amherst College in a way designed to promote the cross-fertilization of ideas.” The Copeland Fellows, who often participate in colloquia and other programming on campus, bring to the College a variety of perspectives and interests, enriching the Amherst community.

Variations VI (1966), for a plurality of sound-systems (any sources, components and loud-speakers) will be performed by students, faculty, and others in the Leroy Neiman Center at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, on Wednesday, December 5, 2012. Variations VI is one of a set of seven variations composed between 1958 and 1967 by American composer, John Cage (September 5, 1912 — August 12, 1992).

This performance was organized by composer, instrumentalist, and SAIC Faculty member Julia Miller. Projects/Systems/Scores are designed by its performers: Lee Blalock, James Connolly, Anna Friz, Eric Leonardson, Julia A. Miller, Alyssa Moxley, Enid Smith, and Will Soderberg. Located in downtown Chicago, the Neiman Center is SAIC’s first ever campus center, recently opened in May 2012.
