2018 marks the 25th Anniversary of the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology (WFAE), founded in August 1993 during Tuning of the World: The First International Conference on Acoustic Ecology at the Banff Center for the Arts. Personally, that event marked the start of a new phase in my development and thinking about sound, listening, and art. For many others it marked a new understanding, one that departs from the limits of cause and effect toward their dynamically changing interrelationships.

More than a celebration of its history and past accomplishments…these gatherings aimed to involve and position a younger generation of practitioners and scholars so that hey would be able to take what has been known and established so far, to assume their roles in the WFAE’s leadership and build on its foundation.

A review of this 1993 Tuning of the World: The First International Conference on Acoustic Ecology, co-written with Lou Mallozzi, and published in New Art Examiner was displayed with other articles, photos, and ephemera from the founding conference. Among the highlights of this The Global Composition 2018 conference was having Claude Schryer back after a 20-year hiatus. He was the driving force in getting it started, along with Hildegard Westerkamp and others. Now that Nigel Frayne is no longer with us, while I am well into my sixth year as WFAE President, it was good having Claude back. Here is his report on the WFAE News blog.
