Listening to Chicago Underground

Friday, February 14, 2020, 12:30–1:30pm

Join me on a soundwalk with Christophe Preissing and Alex Braidwood as we explore Chicago’s underground pedway system with our ears, and ultimately, reveal what urban critic Jane Jacobs calls “the seemingly mysterious and perverse behavior of cities”.

At 12:15 meet me at 112 S. Michigan Avenue, inside the entrance of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s MacLean Center. There is an elevator for those that require accessibility.

At 12:30 we walk over to the entrance to Grant Park North parking garage near Monroe Street, where the soundwalk will begin. The entire soundwalk is wheelchair accessible.

Please register as there will be a limited number of participants in this soundwalk. This event connects with and follows the Advances In Eco-sensing and the Soundscape panel early that morning, in the College Art Association conference.

Presented by NON:op Open Opera Works and Midwest Society of Acoustic Ecology with support from SAIC’s Office of Engagement and the World Listening Project.

This soundwalk revisits some of the unique soundscapes as described by Kerry Cardoza in “Learning to love Chicago with your ears,” and reported by the Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology, in 2019.
