From July 22-26 I was honored to be one of several visiting artists at the ACRE Summer Residency in a rural landscape near Steuben, Wisconsin.

ACRE (Artists’ Cooperative Residency and Exhibitions) is a volunteer-run non-profit based in Chicago devoted to employing various systems of support for emerging artists and to creating a generative community of cultural producers. ACRE investigates and institutes models designed to help artists develop, present, and discuss their practices by providing forums for idea exchange, interdisciplinary collaboration, and experimental projects.

Among the fellow visiting artists I was fortunate to share in discussions with were Brian Holmes, Claire Pentecost, and John Preus. I hyperlinked their names so you can easily visit their websites. You may be deeply inspired by their ideas and productions, as much as I was.

During my visit I led a soundwalk for artists and staff, and gave a performance presentation. I also did some field recording around the residency area. I started a Google Map [see below] to mark where I recorded, including the route of my soundwalk on July 24. Among the recordings is the dawn chorus from just before 4:00 until 8:00.

My plan is to try to add audio in addition to photos to the Google Map points, by extracting GPS locations contained the image files’ metadata. Perhaps it will be useful in future projects of mine and my students, particularly the upcoming Eco-Sensing and Soundscape course I will teach with Lindsey French this fall at SAIC.
