On International Dawn Chorus Day I am inviting local citizens to join me at the shoreline of Lake Michigan at 5:00-6:00 a.m. Saturday, May 2. My “SoundTent” will be located on the beach one block east of Sheridan Road, 20 paces past 1205 W Sherwin Avenue, in Chicago.
Weather permitting, sounds and data collected during the hour will be recorded to be culled into a ‘fixed’ composition for Episode 63 of Radius, the experimental broadcast platform based in Chicago. This episode is a collaboration with SoundCamp / REVEIL, and numerous other transmission arts groups participating around the world interested in media and sound ecology.
Radius curator and founder, Jeff Kolar will bring the Audio Relay, a mobile, low-power FM transmitter built by Brennan McGaffey. Our soundscape will be broadcast on 88.9 FM.
In addition to the piece for Radius, “SoundTent at Camp Sherwin” includes the launch of a live open microphone providing a real time audio stream accessible on the global Locus Sonus Audio Streaming Project Map.
LISTEN to CHICAGO – CAMPSHERWIN streaming from the shore of Lake Michigan.
“SoundTent at Camp Sherwin” is an example of what I may do in Eco-Sensing and the Soundscape, a new course I am teaching this fall with Lindsey French at SAIC. This effort also connects with issues and ideas we addressed in the recent Balance-Unbalance 2015 conference.
Please dress warmly, the wind has been very strong this week, and may remain so on Saturday before sunrise.
