What do we hear and how do we hear it?
Does our sound environment distract us or enhance our life?
Such questions increasingly fascinate designers, media artists, broadcasters, architects and urban planners – as well as the public.
The speakers at the seminar:
Simo and Tuike Alitalo
Sound designers who have curated five international sound art exhibitions in Finland, and were among the founding members of the Finnish chapter of the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology. Their current participatory sound art project “Kuulumia” is
“a sound art project that combines… communal art and artistic research to open a space for a culture of listening, to chart soundscapes and empower citizens to communicate their understanding and concerns about their everyday soundscapes.”
Interior architect, furniture designer, a partner at Pure Design Ltd. Vesmanen won the Interior Architect of the Year Award, 2008, from the Finnish Association of Designers Oramo. The designer of the Balance Audio Chair writes: “I construct the environment from the basic elements of life, light and matter and want to arouse feeling by combining the modern and the time-honored tradition with enduring materials.”
The seminar is moderated by Alex van Oss – Foreign Service Institute teacher, public radio broadcaster and artist. He is also the curator of the Silence Exhibition.
