Look forward for the return of Birgit Ulher, an exquisite sound artist and improvising electroacoustic trumpeter from Hamburg, Germany, who will perform with me in early February. Having performed together on several occasions since 2007, I anticipate this meeting will transport you to another level of music and art in sound.
Joining us are vocal artist and my long-term sound-making partner, Carol Genetti. Katherine Young (bassoon, electronics) joins Birgit in a duet set.
Birgit Ulher and I first performed together in 2007. Carol Genetti and I have been performing together for 20 years. In music critic Bill Meyer’s words, we share an “appreciation for the qualities of individual sounds and the richness of layered tones.” (chicagoreader.com). Genetti’s voice is an instrument of subversive beauty in itself. Ulher and I last performed in Bond Chapel documented here in 2013, hosted by the Renaissance Society.
Birgit Ulher has been active in Hamburg’s free improvisation and experimental music scene since 1982, establishing “a distinguished grammar of sounds beyond the open trumpet” (jazzdimensions.de). Her particular techniques include handheld loudspeakers and radio rather than traditional mutes. The trumpet functions as an acoustic chamber for modulating breath and noise and multi-phonics. With complex tones, granular and splitting sounds she creates compelling sound fields that open and expand for engaged listening, exquisitely shaped by Ulher’s precisely timed silences.
