The Lucky Trikes is a storytelling chamber band, and another Night Out in the Parks partner. We will lead a soundwalk around the park as part of World Listening Day. We’ll do some “ear cleaning” exercises conceived by R. Murray Schafer and some community listening, and even Deep Listening as conceived by Pauline Oliveros.

And read lots of stories about nature and city sounds and listening!

Take a walk at night, and walk so silently that the bottoms of your feet become ears.—Pauline Oliveros (1932-2016)

World Listening Day is an annual global event held on July 18, the birthday of Canadian composer and founder of acoustic ecology, R. Murray Schafer (b. 1933). This year’s theme is “Listening to the Ground” devised by Pauline Oliveros who passed last Thanksgiving Day at age 84. As a well-known woman pioneer of electronic music composition, improviser, teacher, and founder of Deep Listening, she was a friend and inspiration to many of us.

This event is one in The Lucky Trikes’ series of 12 free, family concerts on Tuesday evenings June-August, at three neighborhood parks. The series is part of the Night Out in the Parks initiative funded in part by the Chicago Park District with support of local Park Advisory Councils and other neighborhood groups at each location.

North : Hiawatha Park on June 6, 13, 20 and 27
Central: Garibaldi Park on July 11, 18, 25 and August 1
South: 67th Street Playlot, Jackson Park: August 8, 15, 22, and 29

Partners including the Chicago Public Library and other local literacy, music and cycling programs will share information about local offerings and possibly we’ll have some local partners provide treats between 6-6:30 pm. Families and groups are encouraged to bring a picnic and something to sit on for these outdoor music story times.

Story times with themes will be presented each week by Deirdre Harrison, vocals and uke; KG Price, vocals and percussion; and a special third guest artist each week from Chicago’s booming free jazz and experimental and classical music scenes.

Each park has a rain location so The Lucky Trikes will perform rain or shine!

See you at a Night Out in the Parks soon!!!!
