“Soundwalks have roots in acoustic ecology, which is a field commonly associated with social sciences in the academic world. Acoustic Ecology is a multidisciplinary field that is specifically focused on sound and its relationship to aesthetics, engineering, music, science, and psychology. All these disciplines share knowledge to understand the importance of sound in terms of human communications…overall the soundwalks raise awareness of these different relationships and can provide insight to how we design our environment.” – Read more about this from last year’s Chicago Parks Foundation blog post.

My ideas about soundwalking as ecological practice are informed by a Canadian composer, Hildegard Westerkamp. You may like to read about her approach to soundwalking her new website at hildegardwesterkamp.ca or on her old site at www.sfu.ca/~westerka/writings%20page/articles%20pages/soundasecology2.html

The Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology (MSAE), established in 2009, is a membership organization dedicated to exploring the role of sound in natural habitats and human societies, while promoting public dialogue concerning the identification, preservation, and restoration of natural and cultural sound environments.
