Here’s the final track I produced from my Bedroom Studio event on Make Music Day, Sunday, June 21. My aim was to perform and create a finished sound composition using submissions from my community and the other participating DJs and producers. All the steps of producing a sound composition, in the digital domain, within a three-hour time-frame can be watched on my YouTube Live channel. The challenge was bigger than I could manage. This included learning to use the free and open source OBS (Open Broadcaster Software®) and YouTube Studio within a few days. Now that I know their basic functions, I am better equipped for employing them in future online events. This includes teaching as we are pivoting away from on site, in-person events to online, “virtual” ones during the pandemic. The edited recording on YouTube is shown below.
I am thankful to the many people who responded to my call for audio clips and watched during the Bedroom Studio. Among the audio contributions received was one from Hal Rammel, a phenomenal artist, author, improvisor, and instrument inventor who inspired me to start experimenting with contact microphones and coils springs in 1990. This led to the invention my Springboard in 1994. The unusual, organic and exciting sounds of Hal’s amplified “Sound Palette” provided the inspiration for “Metal Breath,” completed on June 24. The breathes were provided by Brian Shaw. I invite you to listen here and to the other local and international DJs and producers who participated in the Bedroom Studio created by the Make Music Alliance and Make Music Chicago.
