“Ritual Objects – Central Sounds” – A Sonic Ceremony

In this performance I will combine field recordings from Chicago soundscapes with live and recorded sounds by Aurelio, a musician, educator, ethno-musicologist, researcher, sound designer, and sound healer.

Using archaic, contemporary, and invented instruments, artist Aurelio leads an immersive and participatory sonic ceremony recalling the journeys taken by objects featured in Vanishing Beauty: Asian Jewelry and Ritual Objects from the Barbara and David Kipper Collection.

About the Artist:
Through his extensive travels and studies all around the world, Aurelio has become a noted pioneer in the development and manufacture of innovative musical instruments, whether it be simple inviting instruments for beginners, or instruments specially designed for use in sound healing. He is the Creative Director of SVARAM Musical Instruments, Vocational Training and Research Station.

Stones/Water/Time/Breath – Make Music Day, June 21

WATER WORKS! Friday-Saturday 18-20 March

waterworks2016I am one of the curators for WATER WORKS! the 2016 Waterwheel online sharing event devoted to water in its social, economic, scientific, and artistic manifestations. Over this weekend people around the world can sign in for free to host or watch events at the Tap.

My four selected works are “Railroad Storm Drain” by Christopher DeLaurenti; “Unter Grund” by Christina Kubisch & Eckehard Güther; “von der rheinquelle bis hafen karlsruhe | rhein_strom,” by Thomas M. Siefert & Lasse-Marc Riek; and Jay Needham‘s “Liquesce 1.”

Over 150 contributors responded with a total of some 260 contributions accessible on the Waterwheel Media Centre. 22 curators assessed the contributions and will present a selection in a series of seven online panels on the Tap on 18-20 March 2016. Acoustic Ecology and Ethical Listening Lecture at DKSG, June 14

The April-June edition of World Forum for Acoustic Ecology (WFAE) News Quarterly is now online. My “President’s Report” updates readers about publication of the next Soundscape: The Journal of Acoustic Ecology, and previewed some of the many exciting events concerning artistic and technological responses to impending disasters concerning water and climate at the Balance-Unbalance 2015 conference in Tempe, Arizona.

cropped-bal-unbal1On March 25–26, I am participating in the pre-conference acoustic ecology workshop and overnight field trip to the Beaver Creek Biosphere Reserve, organized by the American Society for Acoustic Ecology. On March 27–29, I am honored to lead and present these panels and papers in the spectacular conference, Balance-Unbalance 2015: Water, Climate and Place, Reimagining Environments at Arizona State University (ASU).

Eco-sensing in Higher Education Curriculum

March 28, 2015 • 3:30pm Leonardson and Andrea Polli will lead a panel entitled Eco-sensing in Higher Education Curriculum. A conversation between an international group of academic practitioners and artists about the design and delivery of interdisciplinary curriculum in the arts, engineering and architecture that engages university students with listening and other forms of environmental sensing to promote creative ways to address ecological problems. Panelists will present examples and experiences using listening, field recording, sensors, data gathering, and other ways of sensing ecosystems. Panel participants are Linda Keane (AIADO, SAIC), Leah Barclay (UNESCO Biosphere Soundscapes project), Christopher Preissing (Composer), Lindsey French (Artist, SAIC), Meredith Hoy (Art History and Theory, ASU).
