Tuesday, June 7, I am giving a presentation in the Ecoacoustics Congress 2016, held June 6-8 at Michigan State University in East Lansing.
Ecoacoustics Congress 2016 will bring together scientists from around the world for an in-depth conference exploring new frontiers of ecoacoustics research and development. Sessions at this year’s conference will feature:
- Ecoacoustics Environment
- Fresh Water
- Ecoacoustics Impact
- Community/Species Impact
Titled after the course I co-taught with Lindsey French in fall 2015, “Eco-Sensing and the Soundscape” serves as a teaching resource blending ideas and practices of acoustic ecology with the DIY hacking aesthetic of new media in a post-secondary art school curriculum.
Our course blog provides a curricular resource for you to explore and implement, and an outlet for our students’ work.
On March 25–26, I am participating in the pre-conference acoustic ecology workshop and overnight field trip to the Beaver Creek Biosphere Reserve, organized by the American Society for Acoustic Ecology. On March 27–29, I am honored to lead and present these panels and papers in the spectacular conference, Balance-Unbalance 2015: Water, Climate and Place, Reimagining Environments at Arizona State University (ASU).
Eco-sensing in Higher Education Curriculum
March 28, 2015 • 3:30pm Leonardson and Andrea Polli will lead a panel entitled Eco-sensing in Higher Education Curriculum. A conversation between an international group of academic practitioners and artists about the design and delivery of interdisciplinary curriculum in the arts, engineering and architecture that engages university students with listening and other forms of environmental sensing to promote creative ways to address ecological problems. Panelists will present examples and experiences using listening, field recording, sensors, data gathering, and other ways of sensing ecosystems. Panel participants are Linda Keane (AIADO, SAIC), Leah Barclay (UNESCO Biosphere Soundscapes project), Christopher Preissing (Composer), Lindsey French (Artist, SAIC), Meredith Hoy (Art History and Theory, ASU).

In January I am honored to be an artist-in-residence at Ragdale, a non-profit artists’ community in Lake Forest, Illinois. The estate includes live-in studios and a 50-acre prairie. My 25-day residency will provide time for many interests. This includes studio work, writing, class preparation, tour planning, and acoustic ecology. I will lead a public soundwalk for the World Listening Project and Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology at the Brushwood Center in Ryerson Woods on Sunday, January 25.
In October 2014 Lindsey French and I were awarded our request to team-teach a proposed course called Eco-Sensing and the Soundscape at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, for the 2015-16 academic year. Please visit our course blog: https://ecosensingsoundscape.wordpress.com/
Our course will be offered in the Fall 2015 term and cross-listed with the school’s departments of Art and Technology Studies and Sound.
Lindsey French is a Chicago-based artist and educator. Engaging in gestures of communication with landscapes and the nonhuman, her work spans a variety of media including video, performance, audio sculpture, and generative literature. Find more info on her website.
