Public Conversations and Activations
Over the duration of the Faculty Project Exhibition, Sullivan Gallery will serve as a site for activities engaging visitors in the interrelationships of sound, media, and ecology.
Of Sound and Site

Artist talk and listening session with Eric Leonardson and Anthony Janas. The Flying Monks “perform” using multiple oscillator tones that reflect and combine with physical structure of the Sullivan Gallery. Created for choreographer Fujima Yoshinojo (Rika Lin), transform the space into a temporary sensory experience of aural architecture. Janas will briefly discuss his outdoor sound activities, inviting gallery visitors to “A Prairie In the Lake,” a nighttime soundwalk with listening stations at 7:00–10:00 PM at Northerly Island Park, 1521 S. Linn White Drive, Chicago. This event is supported by the Chicago Park District’s Night Out In the Parks series, organized by the Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology. More information at mwsae.org/.
“Attempting to transfer shared sites of wonder, or anxiety, or both into the gallery, I draw from personal history, selecting artifacts to complement what would be seen, read, spoken, heard and shared. Connecting my haptic, corporeal way of exploring or hacking my day-to-day life and the detritus that accumulates, I use a range of methods, from drawing to soundwalking to radio and Internet transmissions to live performance with electronics and readily available objects, to make and think about the city, including its non-human life in the air, on land and within the water as soundscapes. This, in turn, may reflect on the role of gallery as a site for sound practice; for public engagement, a comment on the function of place and space in cohering agency in a culturally shifting and fluid world.”—E. In mid-June, 2018 I led a 3-day workshop for over 20 graduate students of the International Media Cultural Work program at the Dieburg Media Campus of Hochschule Darmstadt. Their prompt, “How do you actively engage others in listening for everyday sounds,” was explored through ear cleaning exercises, soundwalking, site visits, and discussion, then realized for public performance in soundwalks led by the students in the finissage of their exhibition on Sunday, June 24 at the Rathaus and Museum Schloss Fechenbach.

Reflections about our workshop titled, “How do Soundwalks Engage Urban Communities in Soundscape Awareness?” was co-written with fellow Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology Board members, Amanda Gutierrez and Norman W. Long.
Keynotes by Juhani Pallasmaa, Hildegard Westerkamp, and Sam Auinger are included along nearly 40 papers plus artists talks, soundwalks, workshops, and photos.

On Monday, March 26 I have the honor of being a guest of Iowa State University’s Master of Design in Sustainable Environments, where I will give my talk on Advances in Eco-Sensing and the Soundscape.
This talk discusses several ongoing projects that intersected in 2015, under the name “Eco-Sensing and the Soundscape,” a studio course taught in the fall of 2015 at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. By connecting concepts and practices of acoustic ecology with the hacking aesthetic of art and technology the course sought to open up possibilities for transdisciplinary collaborations, offer new understandings of our environments and our boundaries, locations, and our roles within them as artists, designers, and listeners. New collaborations and new contexts have developed that extend beyond the classroom and studio, to actively engage public awareness in the ecologies of sound, listening, and environment.
Workshop: Listening Above and Below; Eco-Sensing DIY
Be it for live electronic music or field research, making handheld sensors are core methods and devices for learning about sound maps and embodied sensing through an introduction to “ear cleaning,” soundwalking and hands-on hydrophone making.
One of the goals of this talk and workshop is to draw people from ISU’s music school, design college, and engineering program.
I organized a virtual panel discussion on Advances in Eco-Sensing and the Soundscape for Balance-Unbalance 2017 in Plymouth, Chicago, Brisbane, and New York, archived on video here.

Upcoming in 2018
As spring semester begins at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), where I teach, I eagerly embark on a sabbatical term to focus my own projects. Here are some of the events and travels I look forward to:
- Starting January 29, I’m honored to be invited back to the artists’ retreat at Ragdale, until February 23.
- On February 24, I join SAIC Professor Linda Keane and students from her Eco Design course at SAIC to give river ecology workshops for the Chicago River Student Congress 2018 at Bryn Mawr High School, a Chicago Public School.
- A tribute for my friend Nigel Frayne, who passed away on January 8, 2018, was posted the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology (WFAE) News. He was a great friend and supporter of the WFAE, and for me personally, as its president. Please stay tuned we as we remember and honor his many achievements and quiet gifts through the year.

The start of this new year brings a special time for peaceful reflection, planning, performing, production, and fellowship during my 25-day residency at Ragdale. This is my third residency here since 2015. Ragdale is an interdisciplinary artists’ community established in 1976 in Lake Forest, Illinois by poet Alice Judson Hayes, the granddaughter of architect Howard Van Doren Shaw.
Our panel discussion for the Balance-Unbalance 2017 “Sense of Place” conference in Plymouth, UK streams on YouTube Live. Advances in Eco-Sensing and the Soundscape: A Virtual Panel takes place at 2:20-3:20pm BST (8:20-9:20am US CDT), on Wednesday, August 23.
I’ll be leading a panel with Lindsey French and Linda Keane at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, sound and media artists Leah Barclay in Brisbane, Amanda Gutiérrez in Mexico City. Grant Smith of SoundCamp will facilitate on-site in Plymouth, UK.
Their individual and combined efforts engage and activate students and public communities in design of urban soundscapes using virtual environments, social codes of immigrant communities, river listening, soundwalking, plant communication, art-science collaborations, and new media.
