Balance-Unbalance 2016: Data Science + Eco Action

BunB2015data-science4:30 PM Monday, May 9, I am giving a presentation titled “Eco-Sensing and the Soundscape” in the Balance-Unbalance 2016: Data Science + Eco Action conference.

The 5th edition of Balance-Unbalance (BunB 2016) will be held May 9–11, 2016 in Manizales, Colombia. BunB 2016 is designed “…to use art as a catalyst to explore intersections between nature, science, technology and society in an era of both unprecedented ecological threats and transdisciplinary possibilities.” For last year’s conference I co-organized a panel on the eco-sensing theme with Andrea Polli. I hope to publish “Eco-Sensing and the Soundscape” in the conference proceedings. It is meant to be a resource for students and teachers, particularly for those who aim to implement a blend of acoustic ecology and the DIY hacking aesthetic of new media in a post-secondary art school curriculum.

Balance-Unbalance is supported by Leonardo ISATS, World Forum for Acoustic Ecology, Universidad de Caldas, Festival Internacional de la Imagen, Ear to the Earth, and Red Cross | Red Crescent Climate Centre, among many more centers and organizations.

The aim of the conference is—paraphrasing the words of its organizer, Ricardo Dal Farra—to provide a format to get results, for dialogue leading to action on the ecological crises ahead. It is bringing people to together from the arts and sciences to address ideas on how to make change.
